Karen St. James

PictureUnity of Blue and Green, 16x40
My artwork is an exploration of mixed media collage on canvas, created with acrylic paint and hand-crafted papers. Each piece celebrates the interplay of color, from monochromatic palettes to vibrant hues that burst across the canvas. With paper and paint I combine both geometric and abstract formations, resulting in compositions rich in depth and visual appeal.

My subject matter is intentionally abstract, driven by a desire to infuse vibrancy into each piece. I aim to capture attention with bold colors, intricate patterns, and tactile textures, often inspired by nature. Over the years, I have developed a technique that defines my current body of work, using paint to craft unique collage papers. These papers are intricately layered on canvas, and along with more paint, adding more paper I explore design, color and special relationships.

The joy I find in creating mirrors the impact I hope my work has on others. Through my art, I invite viewers to experience the power of color, pattern, and texture, enriching their visual and emotional landscapes, enhancing the spaces they inhabit.
