Deborah M. Russell
Working as a commercial designer and illustrator for over 25 years, I became known as a colorist and visual interpreter. I later became intrigued by the opportunity to work my creative ideas in a looser, more experimental style.
My vision became focused on exploring abstract expressionism with the inclusion of mixed-media collage. As a process painter, I brush on layers of intense color, transparent to opaque, weaving in textures of paper and fabric. In addition I introduce representational imagery to compliment the layered ground, often incorporating avian, floral, and natural elements. I love the conversation that develops on the canvas as the color and imagery interact. It allows a subconscious narrative to unfold as a visual story.
As images evolve on the painted surface, a conversation develops with the medium. Shapes and colors interact, and a subconscious narrative unfolds as a visual story. The end result gives the viewer an opening to translate the story on a personal level. I translate my art experience to teach classes and workshops in watercolor and abstract acrylic mixed-media at my Carmel Valley Studio, Peridot Fine Art, on the Monterey Peninsula. It is my goal to inspire my students to find their own creative path and fulfill their vision of the world around them.

I hope my paintings engage viewers in a moment of reflection, a shared harmony and connection with our ever-changing environment and personal experiences.
