George Riley
Now retired and painting part time, George first studied art in high school in Virginia. Then came a life of college, US Navy, career and family. After retiring from a career in local government in Pennsylvania and California, art has returned.
George had painting instruction from Dick Crispo, Jan Valtr, Mark Farina and several local college instructors. He likes loose representations of compositions interesting to him. He tries to present a mixture of the familiar with a mood that could transport the viewer. George likes acrylics because of its demand for speed when painting, and the surprises it offers. He has recently included wood-burned black and white images in his work.
He has shown his work in the Monterey Peninsula Art Foundation since 2006. He has been a member of the Central Coast Art Association, and has shown work in the Pacific Grove Art Association, Artist Loft on Cannery Row and the Seaside Jazz Art Competition.
George lives in Monterey. His wife passed away in 2015. She was a painter and potter, and also a member of MPAF. George's other interest is political activism in support of the fundamental principles of democracy, voting rights and progressive issues. He led the successful campaign for Measure J in 2018 to pursue buying the local California American Water system and removing its profit from customer bills. He was elected to the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District in 2018, and reelected in 2022.
