‘Beauty for the eye to rest, wonder .... an exquisite presence from the unfamiliar. Using memories from a deep place inside."
As a child growing up in San Francisco, my great grandmother Jane Gallatin Powers’ painting studio, nestled above the sand dunes in the eucalyptus groves on Carmel Beach, planted a seed in my mind. My mother told me about her own little Arabian horse, Canary, which she rode through white sands and dark cypresses. She described family picnics and gatherings on old family lands. One day, I built a house in Big Sur, and lived many years there.
I am a Fine Art Artist / Photographer, Painter, and a Poet, educated at Foxcroft in Virginia, Finch College in New York City, and the San Francisco Art Institute. (California School of fine Arts)
My photographs evoke the spirit and lifestyle of indigenous people. I have exhibited widely and been honored by Congressman Sam Farr who presented my Cuban exhibition on Capitol Hill. My interest has been in Cuba, Haiti, Brazil, Chiapas Mexico, Chile, and Guatemala, spending time in Mayan and Inca lands, Cuzco Peru, and Bolivia. I translated for Los Medicos Volodores {The Flying Doctors} in Sonora and Baja. Now I paint, write, and teach poetry and painting to children. Part of my Jazz years story will be included in the upcoming documentary film, 'The Westerfeld House of Legends,’ directed by Matt Alavi. This film includes many artists and jazz musicians who were part of the “Summer of Love” in San Francisco in the fifties and sixties.
