Melissa Bispo
Melissa Bispo, (born Melissa Shields), is a Monterey native, who began her artistic endeavors at a young age. Encouraged by creative parents, she won many awards locally as a youth. She went on to study art at California College of Arts and Crafts where she earned her B.F.A. and to San Jose State where she earned her M.F.A. Her focus was glass and installation art.
Her creative expression has always crossed many disciplines and includes many mediums both two and three dimensional. Her works may be found in glass, clay, bronze, paper and paint to name the most significant. One of the defining qualities in her work is the use of two dimensional imagery on three dimensional surface, reflecting a narrative quality that wraps the form in a unique way.
She has won many prestigious awards both individually and in collaboration with her husband Keith Bispo for their work in glass and bronze. She works in collaboration with her mother Gisela Shields on some of her functional works in clay. Her work in clay includes both sculptural and functional works, winning numerous local awards over the past decade. Though her works in clay shown at MPAF are of a smaller scale, she also has produced significant installation art pieces of a large scale including life sized figurative works.
Melissa has a passion for teaching art as well and teaches through several local institutions, in disciplines including ceramics, drawing and painting. She maintains a studio at her home in Big Sur, where she enjoys the natural beauty of the area every chance she gets with her husband, daughter and pets.
