Macroflora—An Inward Look
Early one morning in the spring of 2021, I gazed across my yard and noticed the rising sun’s rays sparkling on the dew drops suspended on the wild grasses. I went out with my camera, and as I began shooting, I began to notice the small seeds hanging gracefully from the tall, willowy grass stalks. The gentle morning breezes caused the grasses to sway, and the seeds seemed to be dancing, creating movement and some unique lighting that added an ethereal element to the images I would eventually create.
Over the next several months, I spent many mornings with the wild grasses as they grew taller, continuing on their seasonal journey. The tiny seeds began to swell and reveal shades of color I had never expected. Gradually, I began to see them as intelligent beings with a spirit of their own giving them strength to push on through the changing seasons.
As the summer wore on, the grass stalks began to wither, and the empty husks turned a milky white, having gently released their seeds. The stalks stood tall, elegant and dignified, and I sensed in them a pride for what they had accomplished as they awaited the beginning of a new cycle of life.
While I reflected on the photos I had taken, I felt a closeness to these tiny life forms. I saw in them a strength and sense of purpose, and I am grateful to have captured this touching example of life expressing itself.
