I worked as a commercial painter on commission, painting tiles for installation in kitchen or bath. I loved being able to reach into my customers’ hearts and understand the images which they could not verbalize ~ I was able to paint their dreams for them! When I was finished, they would invariably exclaim that I had painted exactly what they dreamed that they wanted. I really enjoy commissioned work.
I have been working on my series of fantasy paintings called “Dreams Can Come True” every day. I have painted the poems that my mother had read to me at bedtime as a tribute to her and as a fabulous journey of memory for myself. My prior work includes reproductions of classics by Botticelli, Michelangelo and Bouguereau that I loved. I have worked in various mediums, including tile, canvas, wood, glass, porcelain, and furniture.
I thank my parents for surrounding me with their love of music and art. We spent many days at all the exhibits, museums, music and dance performances that New York City had to offer. My father played operas on the stereo on Sundays, and we studied the librettos together. I read all my mother’s art history books and was fascinated by the old masters. When they took me to Florence and my father showed me Michelangelo’s unfinished marble sculptures, my heart and soul were pierced forever.
As a teenager, I painted with oils, and drew the faces and hands of strangers on the subways. I took various art classes in painting, ceramics and crafts. Including the study of Sumi-e with master Pauline Chu at her home. So drawn to the exquisite Chinese and Japanese porcelains, I learned how to throw porcelain on the potter’s wheel, while working as a lab assistant, firing kilns, at MPC and studying glazing. Eventually I was selling hand-painted porcelain dinner ware and art pieces. I had wonderful students to whom I taught all facets of ceramics and painting on ceramics, including overglaze enamel, and also Sumi-e and traditional Watercolor.
